Kirkufjell from my multicopter. Despite a bit of heavy wind and rain , I still made this image on my first day with the copter on Iceland, 50 meters above the ground. I hope the weather will get better tomorrow.

As you can see by the clouds - bad weather was comming.

The famous Kirkufjell waterfall can be seen to the left in the picture. Not that big...

Each year at this time I try to photograph my first sighting of the wild flower Prairie Crocus - Anemone patens . It is also know as a pasque flower as it arrives right around Easter. Once again this year, it is right on time. We saw the first one on Good Friday.

I have been tracking the crocus appearance on Nose Hill for 15 years now. In 2016, I saw the first crocus on March 19. In 2020, it was as late as April 25.

When I'm not looking for wild flowers, you can find me on Twitter

Thanks as always to Ben Locke for his help whenever I'm lucky enough to visit the forest - his knowledge of the area and its wildlife is second to none

Finished my assignments just in the nick of time :)

However, just 2 nights before it was due, I nearly gave myself a heart-attack because my computer shutdown unexpectedly and auto-safe Word did not actually "safe." I was 75% into finishing but luckily it was recovered in the history/documents tab :D

Happy fence friday and have a great weekend :)

Come and join me on my Harris and Lewis Photography Workshop 2nd-8th March 2019 £1,395

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/product/harris-lewis-sco...

I found this wonderful abandoned crofe house on the island of Scalpay on Harris a couple of weeks ago and I could not resist pulling up and having my clients firing off a few shots before moving onto other locations.

The place was in a hell of a state but from high up on the moorland, it looked rather majestic in some outstanding scenery. I love photographing abandoned buildings and to wonder what kind of people once lived there interests me.

The sky was incredibly moody which lent a fantastic atmosphere to the scene. I hope you all like it. Feel free to share it if you wish :D

To watch how I captured this shot watch my video diary of the trip:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cFYdqEuLxI&t

This shot shows Maughold covered in a shroud of eerie Winter sea mist which rolled in over Maughold church yard and its surrounding fields, providing a very spooky yet serene atmosphere. I always love shooting fog and mist as these conditions just add so much extra va-va-voom to a landscape scene. Sadly, conditions like this don’t occur all that regularly and when they do I often tend to be in work unable to capture them.

As soon as I clocked the coastal mist which fortunately in this case coincided with a day off, my first instinct was to head to Maughold, as I have a bit of an obsession with that corner of the Island at the moment. Quite often with coastal mist if you gain a bit of altitude you’ll get above it and that’s exactly what I did by climbing up Maughold Head. Gaining altitude allows you to shoot amazing scenes of the fog surreally swirling round landscape features almost creating islands in a sea of cloud. I’m really pleased with the final image as it’s a shot I’ve wanted to get for a few years now.

Landscape Photography Workshops & 1-2-1 Tuition

www.melvinnicholson.co.uk

Taken on a three-day workshop that I ran last week in Dorset.

Arriving on the beach at Durdle Door in the middle of the afternoon during harsh light and pure blue skies have you stand and look around at what you can capture that might be even remotely interesting and unusual.

Then I spotted this lovely small cave-like indentation in the white chalky cliffs known as Bat's Head. What were the challenges in shooting from this viewpoint I hear you ask? lol.

Well, for starters, there's not much room in there and setting up a tripod is almost impossible. You certainly need a small travel tripod to even have a chance of setting it up. I had a huge tripod with me so I decided to shoot this scene handheld and furthermore I only needed to capture the scene once despite harsh contrast and a crazy depth of field issue. Saying that my Canon EOS R coped impeccably with the stabilisation of the image, the great depth of field leaving everything sharp to look at, from the rim of the cave to Durdle Door itself as well as the dynamic range coping with the varying degree of light.

The more I use the Canon EOS R, the more impressed I am with it.

melvinnicholsonphotography.co.uk/blog/new-zealand/new-zea...

WATCH my three minute YouTube video of footage I captured in New Zealand September 2018

www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GivMMKV4S8

WOW, WOW, WOW, what a place this is. I arrived here with a friend of mine Ed a couple of hours before sunset and a short fifteen minute walk from the car park had us standing on the shoreline of this utterly remarkable iceberg mountain lake.

Oh my word, this is where New Zealand seriously impresses you. As the sun slowly sunk down the mountains behind us and the last throws of light that lit up the peaks of these incredible mountains finally disappeared to be replaced by a billion stars that shone like precious and priceless diamonds, all that remains is you standing there feeling a little emotional and so thankful to be alive witnessing this quite incredible view.

New Zealand for those of you who have yet to visit and experience the breathtaking views for yourself, is quite rightly at the top of the list of countries to visit with a camera. I have had the very good fortune to have visited the country three times now and I honestly cannot wait to return at the start of May 2019 to run a ten day workshop.

All I will say is that if you have ever had a strong desire to fly to the other side of the world and be transported to fairy tale locations, go and DO IT!!! Either with me on a workshop or by yourself. The most important thing is that you experience it. Wait no longer, book the flight and be amazed by what you will see and experience.
